View Cameras are actually the best, however, in answer to your question SLR cameras are very good too.

The Nikon N90s and RB67 are extremely fine, affordable SLR cameras. Good for the beginner.

Hi, I can recommend Nikon Fa, Fe2, Fm3a all are well built cameras which continue to stand the test of time. They dont cost very much and keep their value. They have everything you need to take fantastic shots and have a huge number of high quality lenses which they can be used with. Taking photos should be a intuitive and dont be fooled into buying a camera which has all the latest technology…most of it never gets used and will cost you a lot of money…if you want to spend money on your kit then buy a solid camera body and good lenses.
heres a link to some of the bodies:

Canon and Sony DSLR cameras are probably very user-friendly for a beginner, whereas some Nikon models are probably a little harder to use.

***You didn’t mention if you’re looking at a film SLR or a digital one (my response is based on digital).

Some other (good value options) would be DSLRs from Pentax and Olympus, companies that also make very solid models at a very affordable price.. Keep in mind that the quality of the lenses is probably a more important factor than the cost of the camera body in many cases…

I swear by Canon. Built like a tank and destroyable.
I am a pro photographer shooting with Canon 5D.

A good entry level Camera would be a Canon 400D or 450D
    or maybe a Nikon D80.
They have a lot of Mega Pixels and changeable lenses

Cheap lenses are fine to start with.
A 18 -55 and 70-300 is mostly included as kit lens.

If you don’t like the kit lenses buy a Sigma (slightly better)

Best Lenses there are for Canon is the L serie.
you don’t need this for entry level photography.
I wouldn’t mind to have the Nikon
Nikon D300 is ok (advanced level)
Nikon D700 is very good in low light – high iso
(but they are both SMALL sensor size)

I would love to have a full frame Nikon D3 or D3 x but see below WHY I do not wap brand:
    The lenses are the reason…….

I owa Canon 5D MKI and a 400D (as back up)
    the 24-70 F/2.8 L USM lens (AUS$ 2000) and a Canon 70-200 F/2.8 USM IS (AUS 2500)

I am saving up for Canon 5D MK II (FULL FRAME and extremely good with low light / high iso and first camera ever to film in full frame HD, little bit comparable to Nikon D700 = small sensor and no filming so you can’t compare the two really)

THINK very well about these things. BRAND.
once you start, you want more and more and you will soon find yourself buying REAL GLASS lenses and once this started you won’t want to change brand any more.
    GOOD LUCK :)
